Frequently asked questions

Do I need a ytalk-ng account?
No. ytalk-ng is a Matrix client. You sign in with an account on a Matrix homeserver of your choice. You can't create an account in the app yet; register with your homeserver instead.
Which homeservers work?
Any Matrix homeserver that offers Simplified Sliding Sync (MSC4186), for example current Synapse versions. Sign-in via OAuth 2.0 (Matrix Authentication Service) or password. Legacy SSO without OAuth is not supported yet.
Can I try the app without an account?
Yes. Tap Demo on the sign-in screen. Demo mode shows clearly labelled sample data, makes no network connection and sends nothing.
I see “unable to decrypt”.
A new device doesn't have the keys for older encrypted messages. Enter your recovery key under Settings → session security, or verify the device with another session. Messages whose keys were never backed up can't be recovered.
Why don't notifications show the message text?
That's the default. Notifications show the room and sender; the text only appears once you turn on “show message text” under notifications in Settings. Decryption always happens on your device.
How do I turn off push notifications?
In ytalk-ng's Settings under notifications. This also removes the push registration from your homeserver.
How do I remove my data from the app?
Choose “log out…” and then “Log out and delete local data” in Settings, or delete the app. Without key backup or a recovery key, older encrypted messages can't be read afterwards. Your account and messages on the homeserver are not affected; that's up to your homeserver's operator.
Which devices does ytalk-ng run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 18 or later, and Macs with Apple silicon.
